Review: Rock Bottom Brewery

A few weeks ago, Kate, her husband Ross and I went out to dinner at Rock Bottom Brewery at Fountain Square. Ross gave us the parameters that he wanted good beer and somewhere downtown, so Kate and I decided on Rock Bottom Brewery (our other choice being Nicholson's).

After parking at the Fountain Square garage, we made our way up to the restaurant, where we were told there would be an 1.5 hour wait so we headed to the bar, of course. I am not at all adventurous when it comes to beers. I wish I was but I just don't like very many of them. I was in the mood for beer but wasn't familiar with any of their handcrafted brews, so the bartender recommended the Kolsch. It was pretty good - similar to a Bud Light which was good with me. Ross had the Brown Bear Ale and Kate went with the Red Ale. They were both happy with their choices as well!

A couple beers later, it was finally our turn to sit down, and we were famished. We decided to get an order of the Ballpark Pretzels with jalapeno spinach dip to hold us over. The pretzels are brushed with ale and topped with salt. They were crispy on the outside and soft in the middle, and they paired really well with our beers and the spicy jalapeno spinach dip. Nothing fancy, but they were good.

For our entrees, I decided to order the fish tacos, Ross ordered the sirloin, and Kate got the roasted vegetable pizza.

I always find it a little risky to order a steak at a place like Rock Bottom, but Ross was confident in his decision and said it was actually pretty good. The sides were just okay. The broccoli was steamed and pretty plain (which Ross liked) and he was not impressed by the mashed potatoes.

I was pleased with my cajun fish tacos as well. I liked that each taco had a hard taco shell and a soft tortilla shell. The blackened fish had a spicy kick to it and went well with the cajun remoulade. The sides were just okay. The black beans had way too many scallions and the rice was a little dry.

Kate's roasted vegetable pizza looked delicious! If I wasn't so full from my own meal, I would have definitely snagged a piece of this. She had to take a few pieces home with her because it was so big. I like that they weren't skimpy on the vegetables. It was loaded with mushrooms, tomatoes, spinach, peppers, onions, zucchini, mozzarella and feta cheese. The base was a sun-dried tomato pesto. Kate was happy with her decision.

While no one was overly impressed by their meal, we all thought everything was good. Nothing to write home about but decent food, which is what we were expecting from Rock Bottom. The service on the other hand was below standard. One would think that after waiting for almost 2 hours to be seated, the service after we sat down would be exceptional, especially because we noticed a ton of empty tables after we were seated. If I were the server, I would have started out by apologizing for the wait, and then do what I could to get things done quickly. That did not happen. Things seemed to move at a snail's pace, and the only times we saw our server were when she took our order (after a long wait), and when she gave us our bill. Someone else got our drinks and brought us our food (which I understand is a common restaurant practice so your food doesn't get cold). No one really checked in on us, asked us about dessert, etc. I definitely wasn't impressed with the service.

Overall, the experience was just "okay". The food was pretty standard and the service sub-par. It won't make it on to my favorites list anytime soon. If I go back, it would be for the great location and diverse menu. Even the pickiest of eaters could find something at Rock Bottom.

Review: Krimmer's Italianette Pizza

Krimmer's Italianette is located on Plainfield Rd. in Silverton/Deer Park, which is very close to my house.  I have been here a couple times in the past, but it had been awhile on my most recent visit.  Italianette does deliver but they also have an eat-in dining room.  The room is a good size with booths and tables with two or three TVs showing football, basketball, etc.  It's a great room for a group of people, kids, or table for two.

Ross and I went on a Saturday night.  It wasn't terribly crowded, so we were able to grab a booth.  The menu consists of pizza, salads, and sandwiches with some side items available as well.  Ross and I were in the mood for a variety of things.  I ordered a tossed salad which is topped with tomatoes, cheese, and your choice of ham or bacon.  I chose bacon with Italian dressing.  Ross wanted some bread sticks, so we ordered those with garlic sauce and a medium pizza.  I wanted veggies and Ross wanted meat, so we did half and half.

The salad was fantastic!  The lettuce tasted very fresh, there was a good amount of shredded mozzarella, and the bacon was cooked to order for the salad.  It was very big also for a side salad. I really liked this salad and would get it again for sure.

The breadsticks were pretty standard breadsticks; warm, soft, and served with a side of garlic sauce. These were good!

On the pizza, I got onion, banana peppers, and mushrooms and Ross got pepperoni, sausage and banana peppers.  There was a good amount of toppings, cheese and sauce.  I would describe the crust as medium to thin in thickness which was perfect.  I don't like it too thick or thin, so I liked this crust.  It was crispy without being too crunchy.  Overall, this pizza was pretty great! I was full from the salad and breadsticks, so I didn't have room for very much.  The slices are pretty big also.  Ross really enjoyed his too.  We had plenty to take home for leftovers which was also nice.
I of course forgot to take a picture until after we served some to ourselves, so sorry about the picture only showing a part of the pizza.

The service was good.  Nothing to complain about.  The prices are pretty fair as well.  The salad was $3.75, a medium pizza is $8.99 then $1.25 for toppings, and the breadsticks were 5 for $3.50.  So, not too bad!  If you're in the area, I would definitely give Italianette a try, it's a great local pizza place that is fast, has good food, and good service.

Recipe: BBQ Chicken Pizza

I haven't made a lot of pizzas at home before, but when I do I really enjoy it! I'm still in search for a good pizza crust though, I typically just use the Boboli, but I feel like it is way too expensive! It's around $4 just for one crust and I know I can find something cheaper.  I did mix my own one time, but it was really hard for me to get it in and out of the oven, so if anyone has any good suggestions, please let me know!

I decided to make my own BBQ chicken pizza one night.  This is not a pizza that I EVER order when I do order pizza, but I thought it'd be fun to make it at home.  I'm sure if you have had a BBQ chicken pizza before, you could probably figure out how to do it on your own, but I still thought I'd share mine!

Ingredients:
1-2 boneless, skinless chicken breast (depends on how big they are, or you could also use Rotisserie chicken)
1 pie crust
1/2 cup to 1 cup of chopped red onion (use amount to your liking)
your preference of BBQ sauce, I used Montgomery Inn
1 tbsp honey
1-1 1/2 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese
1/2 cup jalapenos
Cilantro--optional

Directions:
1. I cooked my chicken for about 15 minutes in boiling water, then shredded it. I then put the chicken in a sauce pan on low to medium heat with the honey and let all the flavors come together for about 15 minutes or so.  I added some crushed red pepper (I like spicy food)
2. Next, just assemble everything.  I just spread about 1-2 tbsp of the BBQ sauce on the pie crust.  Topped it with the chicken, onion, jalapenos, then the cheese.

3. Bake for 15-18 minutes.  I read the package for the crust for how long to bake and just made sure the cheese was nice and melted through and the crust was crispy.

All in all, I thought this turned out really great!  I think having the chicken marinade in the bbq sauce with the honey added a nice flavor to the chicken instead of just putting it directly on the pizza.  You could pretty much put any toppings you would like to this, just like any other pizza; maybe some shredded carrots, red or green pepper, or you could even try with turkey or sausage instead of chicken.  I didn't have cilantro, but that would have been a nice touch to top it off with.  This was very easy and my husband liked it a lot too!  Definitely give it a try!

Guest Blog: Noce's Pizzeria

This week, our good friend Abby offered to guest blog about a pizzeria in Montgomery.  This pizza looks awesome! I have eaten here as well and think it is great!  So thanks for sharing Abs, we hope everyone enjoys!
___________________________________________________________________________________

My husband Matt and I tend to do a lot with our families and this summer night was no exception. Matt’s niece and nephew are in town from Cleveland staying with Grandma for a few days, so our nights have been filled with swimming at the pool, riding bikes on the Loveland trail, and of course dinner!

With six adults and three kids do we go out to dinner or cook? Going to the grocery and making dinner was quite a challenge for grandma (also responsible for 3 little ones) and going out is most likely going to be a disaster (trying to keep them sitting, entertained and well behaved while 6 adults eat). So, our decision was Pizza night in!

In my opinion pizza can be one of the best or worst things out there. We’ve all had that quick, cheap pizza that tastes like cardboard, but this time we did it right! We ordered carry out from Noce's, a pizzeria in Montgomery.  It was delicious and worked out perfectly with our big family!

The biggest pizza we had was the White Dream.  It was a giant pizza with garlic and oil for sauce, topped with mozzarella and ricotta cheeses, tomato, broccoli and basil!  The lightness of the garlic and oil sauce was great for a hot summer night and the veggies added good flavor!

The second pizza we ordered was what our family calls “The Bill Special”.  My father-in-law is not so much of a health-nut but he can order a great pizza.  A no sauce pizza with extra cheese and bacon!  I hate to admit it but it’s delicious!  The cheese was perfectly melted and the bacon adds a salty crunch that is to die for!  With a hint of garlic in each bite, what more could you ask for?
The other two pizza’s we order were a bit more on the “typical” side but perfect for the kids.    One was a half bacon, half cheese pizza and the other was a good old pepperoni ‘za.  The kids ate it up and asked for more of the bacon and cheese, but the pepperoni was a bit spicy for their liking (okay for the adults).

The only other thing we ordered were two Caesar salads which were nicely packed with the dressing on the side. Portions were enormous, but the salad itself was just okay.
Our total for one large specialty pizza, three medium pizzas and two salads came to $73!!!! Better than going out for a meal but a bit expensive for pizza!
All in all the experience of Noce’s was positive! I think it hit the spot, was much better than your average pizza joint and left us with plenty of leftovers for the other busy days and nights ahead with the kids! I’d say, give it a try and definitely get the “Bill Special”! :)

Guest Blog: Open-face Buffalo Chicken Pizza Calzones

Thank you so much to our good friend Anne for a great Friday Guest Blog today! Looks delicious - and great photos!!
___________________________________________________________________________

Many thanks to Kate and Kris for inviting us to guest blog!

As avid Internet recipe hunters, Ryan and I found this gem of a food blog called Baked Bree, where we’ve had good luck finding simple yet delicious and fun food to make.

One of our recent favorite recipes is a spin on her Pizza Skewer concoction, which is an ooey-gooey pizza roll/open-face calzone appetizer. But instead of making pizza-flavored bites, we substituted blue cheese, hot sauce and chicken to create a buffalo chicken version. But just to be clear, the pizza ones are equally as good so do yourself a favor and try those, too.

Ingredients
• Pizza dough (1 Trader Joe’s pre-made crust)
• ½ cup of flour for rolling
• 1 ½ cups of chicken (leftover rotisserie chicken chopped into bite-sized pieces)
• ¼ cup ranch dressing (plus additional for dipping sauce)
• ¾ cup finely grated, sharp cheddar cheese
• ¼ cup buffalo hot sauce (I like it spicy, so use less if you don’t)
• Crumbled blue cheese

Recipe Steps

Ryan and I have a bit of an obsession with homemade pizza, and we’ve been experimenting with what pizza dough gets the best results. I read on a blog that Trader Joe’s pre-made pizza crust is pretty tasty and easy to use. This has become our de-facto standard whenever we are craving homemade pizza or calzones.

Trader Joe’s pizza crust also works great in this recipe. Before you roll out the dough, you’re going to want to take it out of the fridge and let it sit for about 30 minutes until it becomes close to room temperature. This will make it easier to roll. Once the dough is ready, roll it out to about a 12” pie. Remember to use plenty of flour (on the rolling pin and cutting board) when rolling it out so it doesn’t stick. After the dough is rolled, layer the ingredients as you would a pizza – first spread the ranch, then the buffalo sauce and then sprinkle the chicken and cheddar cheese.

I know it might be tempting to throw this into the oven, but wait! Next, roll-up the pizza like you would a cinnamon roll as shown below.

Cut the roll into 1” segments and discard the ends of the roll. Grease a cookie sheet or pizza pan, and prop up the 1” segments with about 1” – 2” apart.

Bake in a preheated 425 degree oven for 20 minutes. Pull out the sheet, and make sure the dough is fully cooked before brushing additional hot sauce and sprinkling the blue cheese crumbles on top. Place back in the oven for an additional five or so minutes.

Serve with ranch dipping sauce and some carrots and celery to cool your mouth down and for a healthy touch. Ryan says he likes these just as much heated up again the next day, or a late-night drunken snack.

Thanks again to Kate and Kris for letting us share our yummy take on this appetizer! Enjoy!

Mac's Pizza Pub

I was recently craving pizza and wanted to go somewhere that I hadn't been in a long time. That made me think of Mac's Pizza Pub.  I have only been here one other time and didn't really eat, but I had tried their Gyro Pizza at the Taste of Cincinnati last year and loved it.  So, Ross and I decided to on a Friday night.

Mac's is located on W. McMillan in Clifton on UC's campus.  It is definitely more of a college restaurant, but the crowd was definitely mixed.  There were students, couples, as well as people in there 30s and 40s.  One thing I always love about going to places near college campuses are the prices.  They always have better deals for drinks! Our server was great, she was very friendly and offered some of the specials that were going on. This night, well drinks were $2 and some flavored vodkas were $3.  Very reasonable.

We decided to have a drink or two before ordering.  While we were enjoying our drinks, I took in the decor and enjoyed watching the different patrons that were coming in and out. Mac's front room consists mostly of booths and the back has a bar with high tops surrounding multiple TVs.  The decor has some eclectic pieces as well as some UC memorabilia.  In a little "hallway" there is a shuffleboard table that seems to attract many people.

We finally ordered and I had to go with the gyro pizza and a side salad.  After hearing some of our server's recommendations, Ross went with the "unhealthy" burger.

The side salad was good, it had plenty of toppings and just the right size for a side salad.

Next our entrees came out.  The gyro pizza was just as good as I had remembered!  I don't even particularly like gyros, but I love this pizza.  It is cheesey with a combination of great Mediterranean-type flavors.  The crust is crispy on the outside and soft in the middle, which I like.  A personaly 8 inch pizza was around $8 or $9 and I had a bit left over as well.

Ross' burger looked good but I didn't try it.  It had a bit too many toppings ofr my liking, but Ross seemed to be pleased.  It had jalapenos, bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion and pepper jack cheese. This was served with waffle fries that were a nice alternative to regular fries.

We continued to have another drink and attempted to play the shuffle board...however, some older guys were hogging the table and wouldn't let us play...they weren't even playing at that moment, they were eating!! So annoying...

Anyways, the service was great at Mac's.  I believe our server's name was Nicole and she was always on top of it, very friendly, and prompt.  I really enjoyed Mac's and would love to back again any time soon!

Review: The Wine Guy Bistro

I had been into the Wine Guy Bistro over the summer when it initially opened to buy a bottle of wine but had not been in to eat.  There was a Groupon not too long ago for Wine Guy, and my cousin said it was one of her favorite restaurants, so I decided I'd buy the Groupon to give it a try!  Ross and I went on a Thursday night.  I hate the parking lot where Wine Guy is located, it is in Rookwood right by the Rusty Bucket.  There is never any parking and you typically have to park over by Don Pablo's or somewhere in that area.....well, the restaurant wasn't too crowded on this night and we were offered to sit inside or outside.  I thought the outdoor area looked really nice and cozy, but it was pretty hot out when we went.  The inside of Wine Guy is very open with wooden tables, a wine bar in the center, and a wine shop on one side of the restaurant.  I liked the decor and the tables but the acoustics made it pretty noisy.

Ross and I took awhile to look over the menu.  Our waitress greeted us and explained the wine portion of the menu.  She said that there are various wine flights available for $14.99, glasses of wine, or you can purchase wine bottles from the store and pay for the $10 corking fee.  Most glasses of wine ranged between $8-$15.  We thought the better deal was to get one of our favorite Tempranillos at $10 a bottle and pay for the corking fee.

As we sipped on our wine, our waitress brought a complimentary appetizer of pita wedges with a creamy cheese-type spread.  This reminded me a bit of hummus at first by the looks of it, but it wasn't.  It was cheesy and had a really nice flavor.  I liked this and thought it was a great little appetizer with the wine.

We looked over the menu and realized many of the items are served in small plates and some are offered in large plates as well.  We asked our waitress what some of her favorite items were, she said the bruschetta, margherita pizza, and spicy shrimp pasta.  Well, we decided to try all three!

The tomato and basil bruschetta came out first.  The bread was crispy on the crust and soft in the middle.  The tomatoes were very fresh and it was drizzled with balsamic.  I liked that the basil was shredded and there was just the right amount.  I would have liked a little more balsalmic, but this dish was overall very good.

Next came our margherita pizza.  This was definitely bigger portion than we had anticipated.  After we looked at it, we realized it was very similar to the bruschetta! But that was okay with us.  I liked the tomatoes on this pizza even more than the bruschetta.  They were roasted nicely with just enough sweetness.  We could have easily just eaten these two items, but we wanted to try the shrimp pasta as well.  We had the rest of the pizza boxed up and waited for our pasta.

We had ordered the small plate of the shrimp pasta which was good since we had other items, but I wouldn't say this was enough to share by itself.  This was a great dish! It was definitely spicy though, if you don't like spicy food don't order this.  Luckily we love spicy food and thought it was great!  The shrimp was cooked very nicely and paired well with the linguini.  This was served with a tomato based sauce (yes, more tomatoes) and topped with scallions.  This dish was very light and yummy.  I would get this again for sure.

Our service at Wine Guy was great!  We wished it was a bit less noisy overall in the restaurant, but it wasn't overly distracting.  We were glad we had our Groupon though because all those dishes with the bottle of wine added up.  This would be a great place to go for a bite to eat with some wine, there are many different cheese plates available, to go and share some dishes with friends, or to just have a glass or two of wine.  I think I will definitely go back!  But don't forget your leftovers! We left ours on the table :(

Review: A Tavola

One of my best friends and co-workers, Beth, is moving to Denver in a few short days. You may remember she guest blogged here and here. Beth and I see each other all day, every day so this will be a huge adjustment for both of us. We decided to do a "last supper" before she leaves, since our love for food is one of the things we bond over. We've both been hearing a lot of talk about the new pizza place in OTR called A Tavola and knew this would be the perfect spot. They've only been open for two weeks, so we were hoping that was enough time to work out some of the kinks.

We headed there at about 6 p.m. on a Wednesday evening, and the place wasn't too crowded yet - although by the time we left at about 7:30 PM it was packed and there was a wait to be seated. When you first walk in, you notice the high, open ceilings, clean, modern lines and industrial feel to the place. At the risk of sounding cliche, I would describe the place as very "hip".

After perusing the menu of pizza, bruschetta, antipasti and dessert, we knew we were going to have some tough decisions ahead. We wanted to try everything! We decided to try almost everything after some thorough debating and consulting with our amazing server, Kris. He had a lot of good suggestions, and you could tell he was passionate about the menu. Fully intending to take home leftovers, we ordered (prepare yourself for this long list) eggplant caponata and goat cheese bruschetta, sweet corn and ricotta bruschetta, dates, arancini (fried risotto balls), fig and prosciutto pizza, brussel sprout and bacon pizza, and grilled peaches for dessert. A lot of food for two girls, but we were up for the challenge!!

The food started pouring out of the kitchen rather quickly. First up was the eggplant and goat cheese bruschetta. One word - AMAZING! This was absolutely delicious! The bread was perfectly crispy, despite the mound of toppings on it. Could have easily been soggy, but it wasn't. The flavors of the eggplant caponata were wonderful. The eggplant was stewed in some sort of sweet/sour sauce and topped with fresh cheese and herbs.

Next, the dates were brought out. They were stuffed with house made sausage, wrapped in bacon and served with tomato sauce. These, too, were delicious! They were sweet and savory with the combination of all the flavors. They were a little bit chewy. We loved them!

The next dish was the sweet corn and ricotta bruschetta. I was a little hesitant about ordering this one, but I just went with it because it was unlike anything I would normally try. It ended up being just okay. I looooved everything we tried previously, so this one was a let down for me. Beth really liked it, but I wasn't crazy about the flavors or the texture. The bread was still perfectly crispy, but the topping was a little mushy.

The final antipasti dish we got was the arancini, which are fried risotto balls. I was sooo excited for these. Risotto is one of my favorite dishes - and who doesn't love anything fried? These were a no-brainer. They turned out to be good, but not great. Beth actually didn't like them very much, but I did. They were very crispy on the outside with cheesy, gooey risotto on the inside. Great potential, but the one downfall was that the risotto wasn't very flavorful. It was very plain. I found myself trying to get more of the salsa verde that was drizzled on the plate so there would be more flavor to the dish.

Finally, after all our grazing prior to the main event, we got our pizzas. After all, these were what we came for and what they're notorious for. Our server explained to us just how awesome their pizza oven is. It was imported straight from Italy and is one of only a few in the United States (Mario Batali apparently owns the same one). It heats up to 900 degrees and cooks a pizza in 9 minutes. Phenomenal!

Beth and I were both getting pretty full by this point, but we at least had to have one slice of each pizza. I tried the bacon and brussel sprout pizza first (photo below on left), which was topped with fontina cheese. This had some sort of white sauce on it - definitely wasn't traditional red. This pizza was awesome! The crust was thin and crispy, the toppings complemented each other perfectly. Delish!

Next I tried the fig jam and prosciutto pizza, which was topped with fontina cheese and arugula. This one was even better than the other, although not by much. They were both excellent. The sweetness of the figs was perfect with the salty prosciutto and peppery arugula. I'd highly recommend either of these options....although I'm sure you won't be disappointed by any of their pizza options.

If you're thinking that after eating all this food, we couldn't possibly have room for dessert....you're wrong! We read a description on the menu for grilled peaches and had to try them! But it wasn't the "grilled peaches" that rivoted us.....it was the accompanying lavender vanilla whipped cream that got us!! And yet again, we were not disappointed. This was sooo good. They gave us a very generous amount of the thick, fresh, homemade whipped cream (see photo below), grilled peaches and cherries, and chopped pistacchios. I normally am not a big fruit-for-dessert kind of girl. Give me chocolate any day. However, I will say, this was too die for. There was the slightest hint of lavender and vanilla in the whipped cream. I kept sneaking spoonfuls of just the whipped cream, although it was great with the grilled, carmelized fruit.

A Tavola is definitely a must-try! It's a great addition to the Gateway Quarter of Over-the-Rhine. The food and wine were outstanding! The service was even better than the food! And the atmosphere is fun and exciting!

Review: The Firehouse Grill

On a recent Friday evening, I met Kate and her husband Ross for happy hour at The Firehouse Grill in Blue Ash (the old location of Watson Bros. and Apsara). It was in the midst of the ridiculous amount of April rain we had here in Cincinnati, so we were ecstatic that it was a sunny day and we could sit outside. They have a beautiful patio that overlooks a pond with a fountain. Despite the traffic on the nearby busy streets, it really is peaceful and serene back there.
We met at 5:15 immediately after work and the place was already filling up. Kate and her hubby each had a beer and I started with a glass of wine. Then it was on to the food menu…they have a pretty standard menu consisting of some typical appetizers, salads, burgers, sandwiches, pizzas, entrees and pasta dishes. There were a lot of items that jumped out at me, but Kate and I decided to split the buffalo chicken rolls and the barbeque chicken pizza – I told you we like to split everything! J Ross went with the Back Draft burger and fries.
Our server – who was very nice but a little ditzy – brought out our buffalo chicken rolls first. These are a play on traditional egg rolls – instead of the standard ingredients, they have bits of fried chicken, pepperoni, Monterey jack cheese and buffalo sauce and they’re served with blue cheese dressing. Kate and I both prefer Ranch dressing so we asked the server to substitute that instead. These were pretty good – although I don’t know if I’d order them again. I am obsessed with Teller’s (in Hyde Park) version of this appetizer, and these just didn’t quite compare. If I had never had Teller’s buffalo chicken rolls before, I probably would have loved these (which was the case for Kate). They do have a nice crunch and a great buffalo flavor. I’m just biased towards Teller’s.
Next the server brought out our pizza and Ross’ burger and fries. The barbeque chicken pizza comes with bacon, pulled chicken, onion, mixed shredded cheese and cilantro. They use a homemade barbeque sauce that is pretty good and pretty sweet. Of course, we ordered onions on only half since I despise onions and Kate loves them. Overall, Kate and I both enjoyed the pizza. I pretty much like anything with bacon, although I think it could have used a little more cilantro (but I’m very partial to cilantro), and when I make this pizza at home I add roasted red peppers, which I think would have been a nice addition.
I didn’t try Ross’ Back Draft Burger, but it looked pretty darn good!! It was topped with jalapenos, chilies, Monterey jack cheese, bacon and guacamole and came with a side of fries. Ross really liked it! And the fries were pretty good as well – nice and hot and crunchy and not too salty!
Overall, I think the food at Firehouse is pretty standard – nothing extraordinary, but the atmosphere is really nice, it’s close to home and work, and the service was decent, so I’m sure I’ll be back!
~Kris
